Slnko (Sun) records is one of Slovakia’s most renowned labels, annually supplying the local scene with inspiring and exciting music, often from the most unlikely sources. Their latest release is by a Slovak songwriter Ivana Mer. Her debut album Early Works, written and recorded in different parts of Europe, has been in the works for the past 5 years, and we’re finally witnessing its release. This review is specifically about her single called Mereus.
Ivana’s clear voice breaks the silence. Layered harmonies create a colourful palette of sounds. Mystical lyrics intertwine with the layered voices and you are hypnotised. Male voices and an unexpected low frequency kick widen the range of frequencies you hear. Interesting male almost-beatbox-but-not samples join the mix, making Mereus an absolutely surreal and narcotic listen.
